Drum Making
Igniting Spirit presents workshops throughout the year, and in different locations, enabling participants to create their own Native American-style Hoop Drums. Unless otherwise arranged, classes are held at Igniting Spirit in Portland. The cost of this workshop is dependent upon the size of the drum, and the type of hide used.
Hoop sizes range from 10”-24” ~ Round or Octagon ~ Hides may be Deer, Elk, Horse, Buffalo, Goat, and Cow, Moose, and Bear ~ depending upon availability.
Karen is also available to create a drum especially for you.
Please contact Karen if you are interested. A minimum class size is required.
Drum making is a prayer. With this in mind, and utilizing teachings from the Medicine Wheel, you will make your own hoop drum. We give gratitude to the Spirit of the Four-Leggeds, thanking them for giving their lives in providing the hides; to the Spirit of the Tree Nation, thanking them for their sacrifice in providing the hoops; and to the Spirit of the drum, as a gift for healing the people.
The use of drums is a sacred practice and one that can bring you closer to the magic that is Spirit. Allow yourself to open to the infinite possibilities of healing with the beat of a Native American-style hoop drum.
The use of drums in ritual and healing is a well-known tradition. Drumming is a technique used to alter the state of mind and reach deep states of consciousness. Every cell of our bodies listens to the drumbeat. Scientific evidence exists showing the increase of cellular immune components associated with drumming. Drumming enhances relaxation and theta-wave production producing pleasure, enhanced awareness, and release of emotional trauma. The drumbeat is likened to the heartbeat of the earth, and the beat of our mother’s heart as heard from within the womb.

Hello magnificent Karen! I received my drum today and I am absolutely in awe of its beauty and sound! I don’t know how to thank you for creating such a glorious being for me. I was connected to it at first touch! It is magical! I love it!
Blessings for you, Ruth Lehman, Stafford, Kansas
Karen! I woke up this morning knowing what the drum is for! It is my "Planting Drum"! I saw myself dancing the drum around the garden bed I was going to plant next, calling in the Spirits of the Land: Nature Spirits, Devas, Guardians for the bed, Elementals, Power Animals..., doing an invocation with deep gratitude for the preparation and care of the soil and the plants coming together in this place, visualizing the highest most healthy version of the plants to be born there! Oh, my, it was amazing! I'm getting misty now just thinking of it. Glorious next level of co-creating with my garden. Thank you for your contribution of love and focus and creation of this beautiful drum that will bring in the next spiral of evolution of spirit focus to this farm. Brilliant!
I love you, Lisa Fuller, Sister Moon Gardens, Estacada, Oregon

Hi Karen, I got my drum yesterday and I LOVE IT!!! As soon as I opened it, I could feel the energy you put into it. It was so powerful that my head was buzzing for the rest of the night. I love the craftsmanship and couldn't be more pleased with the aesthetics. It's the perfect size for me and I was pleasantly surprised by how light it was. Thank you again!
Blessings, Lisa Pranger, Doctor of Psychology, Illinois
I was just thinking about you and my drum today -- how much of an important part of my life it has become. I meditate with it most mornings and also drum a little when I meet frustrations. Just can't imagine my life without it.
